There are three primary reasons military transition is challenging:
  1. The military transition and career planning training currently provided by the Department of Defense is inadequate. The five day Transition Assistance Program (TAPS) is short and late. The good news is that it is being upgraded and Service members are encouraged to start it one year prior to separation – but change is slow!
  2. Military and civilian cultures are vastly different!

3. We experience a great deal of loss when we leave military service. Some of these losses include:

  • Identity
  • A sense of purpose
  • Camaraderie
  • Structure and Clarity
  • Finances
